Weekly Observations

I realized that pattern migrates when I started paying attention this week. It’s almost a reflex for my body to break patterns once I notice them. The patterns here refer more to habits, such as how I like my coffee, how I go to school, the paths that I walk, and so on. Once spotted, I am prone to choose another option, hence the pattern slowly shifts. From black coffee to coffee with cream, from subway to bus. It’s nice to acknowledge that patterns are breakable and can be fluid if one wants. This reminds me of when I was living in Norway, the daytime shifts dramatically throughout the year. In summer, the sun was out 21 hours per day, and in winter the opposite. Being able to witness a pattern shift on a geographical scale was very moving. Being able to live inside a pattern and be dictated by it.

Other than these, another pattern I observed in the physical world are alphabet. How they repeat one after another, line after line, and eventually form a page, then a book. How designers lay out the spaces between these patterns affects our reading immensely. Patterns that come with functionality have less flexibility with their arrangements. For example, the color of traffic lights, the road signs, and the exit lights. They almost have to be universally identical because they have to indicate danger to all human beings. I like the idea of shared patterns or patterns that all human recognizes.
